What sparked your passion for science?
I always enjoyed science at school, particularly biology, but at that point I didn’t really realize it was something you could do as a career. I studied biology at university but wasn’t sure what I wanted to do afterwards. I was always interested in the translational aspect of biology and the potential for research to directly benefit patients, so I started to investigate how to move in that direction. I got in touch with a group leader at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, who offered me an opportunity to brush up on my lab skills while I applied for PhD positions. As luck would have it a PhD position opened up in his lab which I applied for and was accepted for the position!
Can you tell us about your role at ProQR?
I’m a Senior Scientist at ProQR. In my group, we work on optimizing cell models for testing our editing oligonucleotides (EONs). By training, I am a cell biologist, so that suits me perfectly. I’m also a Science Lead, where I am responsible for overseeing day-to-day project planning and setting the scientific direction to reach our team goals. Overall, I like the combination of scientific work and managing responsibilities that my role offers.
What do you enjoy most about working at ProQR?
I am very proud to work at a company that is using an innovative technological approach to ultimately help patients. Something I also value a lot about working at ProQR is the opportunity to work with such great my colleagues. There is a great atmosphere in the company, and as a Brit working in the Netherlands, I feel very welcome here. I also really admire the founding story of the company. During my postdoctoral studies, our lab had a collaboration with ProQR, and I thought it sounded like a cool place to work. And now here I am!
Are there any upcoming company events that you are particularly excited about?
The ProQR conference is always a highlight of the year. Every year we take some time offsite as company to participate in workshops and team-building events, followed by a fun social time in the evening. I’ve been to three ProQR conferences so far, and each one has given me a practical takeaway that I’ve applied in my day-to-day work.
How do you enjoy spending time outside of work?
In my free time I enjoy exploring the Netherlands with my wife and two children. We moved here five years ago, and we still love to find new places to visit. I also like running, and in the past, I have completed five marathons in four countries and one 50 km ultramarathon through London!
Can you tell us about your role in the Works Council?
I was elected to the Works Council last year and currently serve as Vice Chair. In this time, we have advised on various policies which affect working conditions at ProQR. I really enjoy contributing ideas to help shape the company while making sure employees’ interests are heard and represented.
